Basic DR requirements for SMEs

Post by Rakhirandiseo »

For smaller companies, the risks—and how to address them—will often be the same as for larger enterprises.

SMEs need to know where their important data is and that it is backed up. They need systems to restore key applications, either on-premises or in the cloud, and they need to determine how quickly they need to recover.

SMEs also face specific challenges related to competencies, resources, experience and access to the market for DR and data protection systems.

The basic requirements for DR for SMEs are belarus mobile database to those for larger organizations. They need to be able to restore data from backups and put backup systems into operation to support application operations. These systems can be on-premises or cloud-based, and recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery points (RPO) must be defined for them.

“In theory, there’s no difference in disaster recovery between SMEs and other organisations,” says Tony Locke of analytics firm Freeform Dynamics. “In terms of processes and procedures, you should be doing the same things for the same reasons. It all comes down to understanding what systems you have running, how important they are, and how quickly you need to get them back up and running.”

The main differences are in resources: budgets, skills and, less tangibly, the ability of the enterprise to handle incidents. These include the ability of managers to handle an incident and provide the “command and control” that larger companies can provide.

A large enterprise may have a dedicated disaster recovery or incident management team. However, smaller organizations have fewer layers of management, and responsibility is more likely to fall to the CIO, CFO, or even the CEO or business owner. They are also less likely to have experience in disaster recovery.
