Data centers under the gun of DDoS attacks

With the growing importance of data in the modern world, data centers are increasingly becoming targets for attackers, writes Ashley Stephenson, CTO of Corero Network Security, on the Data Center Knowledge portal.

Today's data centers face a range of challenges, from the need for cost-effective cooling solutions that can handle the heat generated by the dense computing environments they house to meeting the requirements of the data they store and process. And that's before we even consider data security.

After all, when it comes to security, there’s chile mobile database at stake than just protection from physical threats like vandalism and theft, or even natural disasters like tornadoes and floods. Given the importance of data in today’s world, data centers are in many ways the keepers of the keys to the digital realm. As such, they are increasingly becoming targets for attackers, whether they’re individuals looking to profit from stolen data or governments looking to sow chaos.

Modern data centers emerged as a place for organizations to store and process the growing volumes of data they collected and used to run their businesses. However, in the late 1990s, at the height of the dot-com era, many companies found that they could no longer effectively protect and manage the vast amounts of data they used on-premises to run their businesses. So they began migrating that data to the cloud and turned to server colocation services.

However, as customer needs have evolved, so have the types of services they offer. Today, managed public cloud, interconnections/connections, managed services, and wholesale colocation are among the most in-demand services, and many colocation providers have moved to as-a-service models with options that are both flexible and scalable to appeal to companies moving away from hyperscalers.

This rapid evolution of additional, more functional service offerings has proven to be both a blessing and a curse for data centers. Because now that they have a new set of services to offer, they must also address a new set of threats that are constantly evolving and expanding, with no end in sight to their volume and complexity.
