It's time for passwordless authentication

Sometimes passwords are more of a problem than not having one: a person can forget or lose it, and then access to the information they need can become a quest. SecureDrives CEO Paul Norbury tells Information Age why the concept of passwordless authentication could be a step forward for organizations.

Passwordless authentication is not a new idea. People use the same password across multiple systems, they write it down so they don’t forget it, and it just doesn’t do a good job of protecting what it’s supposed to protect.” Facebook was born in 2004. YouTube followed a year later, and Twitter followed in 2006. Apple launched the iPhone in 2007. Gates was talking about passwordless authentication at a time when cloud services had not yet reached their peak popularity, and ransomware was a rarity and not every company knew about it.

Organizations wanted to keep devices secure, but passwords were deemed inadequate. They still fail to protect. Even though passwordless authentication has proven to be more efficient, effective, and secure, and allows for faster sign-in to multiple computers and sites, we continue to use passwords.
