According to the Google Consumer Barometer, about 70% of Australians say they buy products online from overseas at least once a year. e-commerce seems to have become a common way of shopping in Australia. According to a survey by statista.com, there were about 21.18 million Internet users in Australia as of January 2016. Assuming that the population of Australia was 24.05 million as of March 2016, the Internet penetration rate per capita was 88%, and the smartphone penetration rate was also high at 77%.

Other popular items included fashion-related products such as hula dance and flamenco costumes, and the health supplement fucoidan.
