Since its inception in 2009, the DevOps movement has evolved rapidly and at times bewilderingly. Initially designed to foster collaboration between development and operations teams, it has gradually transformed under the pressure of technological trends and business needs.

The rise of automation tools , such as CI/CD (Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment), has led some companies to associate DevOps solely with specific technologies and practices. As a result, many have reduced DevOps to a series of dedicated tasks or roles, rather than an overarching organizational philosophy .

Moreover, with the rise of microservices , cloud- based infrastructures loan data and the adoption of agile practices , DevOps has become a key lever to meet new demands for speed and flexibility. However, this rapid adoption has sometimes led to a dilution of the basic principles. The cultural component , a fundamental pillar of the movement, is often neglected in favor of an excessive focus on tools.

The emergence of new concepts, such as DevSecOps (integration of security into the DevOps cycle) or AIOps ( integration of artificial intelligence into operations), is also a sign of this evolution. While these additions are necessary to meet contemporary challenges, they also show that DevOps is not static, but constantly evolving.

So, while the evolution of DevOps is natural and inevitable, it must be accompanied by a reflection on its founding principles . It is essential not to lose sight of the importance of team culture , reasoned automation and continuous improvement , which are at the heart of the movement's success.

The Foundations of DevOps
At the root of the DevOps movement are clear and well-defined principles, often summarized by the acronym CAMS : Culture , Automation , Measurement , and Sharing . These four pillars form the essential foundation of any successful DevOps initiative.

Culture : This is the heart of DevOps. It’s about creating close collaboration between development and operations teams, eliminating organizational silos. This culture is essential to enable true agility.

Automation : It plays a key role in reducing human errors and improving the speed of software delivery. It helps automate repetitive tasks, such as testing, deployment, and infrastructure management.

Measurement : The importance of measuring each stage of the software lifecycle to enable continuous improvement. By collecting performance data , teams can identify areas for improvement and optimize their processes.

Sharing : Sharing information and knowledge within teams is fundamental to strengthening collaboration and innovation.

As needs evolved, a fifth pillar was added, Lean , giving rise to the acronym CALMS (Culture, Automation, Lean, Measurement, Sharing). This pillar emphasizes the importance of maximizing the value provided to users while minimizing waste. It is based on agile principles, such as continuous improvement and the elimination of non-value-added activities.

By respecting these foundations, DevOps not only breaks down traditional barriers, but also creates a work environment where teams collaborate effectively and adopt a continuous improvement approach.
