The statistics we just cited are a good example of a "hook." One of the most important things a journalist learns is how to get readers interested in a story.

Most press releases are the same. The difference is in the hook. When writing a press release, it is essential to explain why the journalist, and ultimately the reader, should care about the new product or service.

Take advantage of seasonal events

Another good example of a hook is a seasonal event or a “National Day of” something. No matter what you sell or make, there’s likely a day associated with it. If you run a dog-sitting service, you might find it helpful to mention World Dog Adoption Day (September 23).

Browse the national days calendar and make a list of little-known days that you can use to draw attention to your business.


Tip: Remember that there are long lead times for stories to be published in print, so pitch your piece several days before you want it to be published. For magazines, think in months. Waiting until November or December to submit a Christmas story means you won’t get attention because the magazine will have already filled its pages with other stories.
