Chinese Competition with Temu: Translation Bloopers, Dark Patterns & More

Post by chandon »

Dutch consumers and companies should “really think very carefully” about whether they still want to install and use apps from countries such as China and Russia. Minister Dirk Beljaarts (EZ) recently told the Lower House. His criticism mainly concerned data collection and access to camera, contacts and wifi.

He is also concerned that the products do not meet European requirements. Earlier, the ACM reported that Temu must comply with consumer law and adjust its working methods. Otherwise, the app could easily sms gateway bulgaria be banned. But Retailtrends reported: “With over 7 million Dutch users per month, we do not have to count on that. The app lets users 'shop like a millionaire'.”

China
It is of course well known that China has played a major role in the production of consumer goods for decades - especially non-food. Although in the past (read: in my youth, so the 70s) we saw 'Made in Taiwan' more often than 'Made in China', this has started to shift considerably a few years ago. However, where the former was often a quality stamp, the latter is more of an 'OK then'.

Due to China's reputation (quality, working conditions, pollution), the origin is often somewhat secretive. In addition, there is the fear of Chinese dominance, and it is established that they also do not take many agreements and rules very seriously.

Online, however, the step is quickly taken for both provider and consumer, but then you have to have both the presentation and the logistics in order. That sounds like an open door, but when you see what kind of photo material is online and what kind of texts are presented around it... Then you sometimes look three times before you understand what is being said, until you decide that something is not possible at all. Like an Android smartwatch for €5.38.

And a newcomer is Temu . I recently heard from insiders that bol is seriously worried about this competitor. The website is professional, the prices are very low, and I can personally testify to a reasonable to good quality of the articles. Especially those made of plastic or metal, because textile remains somewhat vague. 'Cotton mix' turns out to consist largely of polyester, 'merino socks' are not made of wool and the fit sometimes makes you spontaneously laugh or cry.
