Four Ways Social Media Helps SEO (Part 2)

Post by Tingli »

In the previous article we talked about the first two ways that social media can help with effective website SEO. With the first way we learned that it is important to establish some mechanism of communication and interaction between your SEO tools and your social media tools. The second way showed that effectively managing the people who consistently follow your brand is a great way to support your website SEO as it continues to create opportunities to spread more inbound links to your website through them.

In this 2nd and final part of the social media and SEO series, we will discuss the other two ways you can optimize your social media activities to effectively position your brand on the Internet:

3. Anticipate changes in social searches
While there are a few basic principles to work with when it comes to social search, individual factors, i.e. new social networks, are still developing all the time. When deciding which social networks to use in your digital marketing strategy, think about the weight each one has in the search engine you decide to rank on.

Don't count out Google+: When the parent company of a new social network is the country wise email marketing list world's largest search engine and it starts integrating its content into search results, it's worth testing the waters to see if the waters are really as cold as some say. So, it's best to take a moment to set up a good corporate page on Google+ and see how the content you post there performs. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain in terms of your brand positioning on Google.

Don't count out Bing: Not only did Bing account for 30% of global searches in 2012 , it also has the most diverse social search offering of any search engine. With its integration with Facebook, Twitter, Quora, Klout, and Foursquare, Bing can give businesses that are heavily active online an edge.
Keep your Facebook page up to date: While social search is not yet part of Facebook's core purpose, the social network has a team of engineers including former search expert Lars Rasmussen working to improve the searchability of its website. Additionally, research by social researcher Dan Zarrella shows that there is a direct relationship between Facebook activity and link building, an essential aspect of off-page SEO.
4. Remember the golden rule
The golden rule of SEO is pretty simple and effective: First and foremost, create good, useful content. The rest will follow. Even with the changes that search engines have undergone over the years, that rule has proven its strength in its effectiveness. Even with the rapid growth of the influence of social search on search engines, the good news is that if you are creating good content, you are already halfway to achieving ranking in this new context.
