Scientists have figured out how to write messages to employees so that they work better

Many companies with remote employees set themselves the task of motivating and maintaining the productivity of such employees. Scientists from the Texas School of Business found that this can be successfully done using corporate messengers (like Slack or Microsoft Teams). The main thing is to choose the right approach.

The researchers studied a Chinese company with 340 sales managers. They then conducted a second study with more than 200 American employees from various companies. The results were the same.

Whenever one of the sales managers closed a deal, the HR department employee would notify the rest of the staff. There were two types of messages: one praised the employees' efforts to close the deal, and the other praised their professional abilities. These were not automatic knocks, but long individual messages. After that, the scientists analyzed the number of calls to customers made by managers who received the messages. It turned out that both options increase productivity.

The effect of these two messages depended on whether the recipients were gcash database personally acquainted with the person being praised:

Messages praising efforts motivated all employees to make more calls to customers.
Messages praising abilities had the greatest effect only on familiar colleagues.
The focus on effort had a greater effect because effort is a controllable process. “People work harder when they perceive that the goals they are pursuing are achievable,” the study’s authors explain.

The situation with abilities is a little different. Those employees who were personally acquainted with the hero of the message believed that they had similar abilities, which meant that they could achieve the same results. If colleagues were not acquainted, they were less sure that their abilities were on the same level.

In most cases, the workers were unfamiliar with each other because they were working remotely. “In such circumstances, managers should use messages that highlight the efforts of employees,” the researchers conclude.
