There may be some great use cases for quantum computing, but no one knows exactly how long we'll have to wait for a production-ready machine, ComputerWeekly reports.

While quantum computers already exist, the systems known to date do not yet have enough qubits to pose a threat to the public-key cryptography currently in use, according to Eren Kret, Signal’s CTO. However, the company is strengthening its protocols to prevent powerful quantum computers from breaking encryption.

“If a quantum computer powerful enough were to be built in the future, it could be used to calculate the private key from the public key, thereby breaking encrypted messages,” says Kret. This is known as a “build now, decrypt later” threat.

Some experts believe that such a quantum computer is still a few years away, but it is possible that the challenges of creating a stable quantum computer with sufficient computing power may prove insurmountable. “At least some say 30-plus years, and there are even those who argue that we will never solve the problems needed to build a quantum computer with enough coherent qubits to break existing public-key cryptosystems,” Kret says.
