Ronaldo: a story that could (and did) make a movie
Over the past few years, we have become accustomed to seeing the stories of countless well-known figures in cinema. After the award-winning Senna and the highly controversial Amy , Asif Kapadia has turned to the world of football, this time as producer of the documentary about Ronaldo .
The project was led by Anthony Wonke , a documentary director who accepted the challenge of filming the life of the Portuguese footballer for over 14 months. The result was a documentary that stands out for conveying a more intimate side of Cristiano Ronaldo, talking about subjects that we don't normally hear him speak about.
From his family to his son, whose mother is unknown (at least to the public), Ronaldo takes us into the inner circle of the star, revealing the more human and less divine side that is usually propagated by the media and advertising campaigns. The aim is to make it clear that Ronaldo is more than just the best player in the world, and that his personality also encompasses other roles: father, son, family man and friend. That said, his professional side is latent, but it is not the only issue addressed.

In addition to himself, Ronaldo will be joined by his mother, Dolores Aveiro ; his brother Hugo Aveiro ; his businessman Jorge Mendes ; his coach Florentino Pérez ; and his eternal rival, Lionel Messi . “For those who know me, it won’t surprise you. I’m like this, I don’t change depending on the people, the environment or the cameras,” said the player in a press release about the documentary.
At the same conference, Cristiano also added that he is not an actor and, although he had some doubts about the exposure he was subjecting himself to, he ended up going ahead without fear of criticism. In the end, he has no doubts: he had a “great time” and, for that alone, Ronaldo was worth it.
The documentary premiered last Tuesday in Leicester Square , London, and was shown in more than 300 cinemas around the world. Of those 300, 25 were Portuguese and, in addition to the film itself, spectators were able to watch the VIP ceremony. Those who didn't use the icon at the time can use it now: just watch it and post it on Facebook .
