5. Can Link Building Help and How Much?
Here we enter a minefield and a still gray area. Gray because, at the moment, no one seems able to understand exactly what role links have in all this, or how much they influence Core Updates and in what way. From my observations I have noticed two recurring patterns:
You can do (or have done) all the link building you want, even of excellent quality, aiming at sites with very high trust. However, if the content of a certain page, even driven by external links, no longer responds well to a specific search intent, those positionings will not be recovered anyway.
On the other hand, I have also noticed how the ones who resist the Core Updates (although some giants have fallen, see Aranzulla.it) are always the same “big” publishers.
And what keeps them going if not their excellent link profiles? Let's remember that we ourselves, the users, determine the results of the Core Updates. We tend to click and read sites like MyPersonalTrainer or Multiplayer because we “trust” the authority they bring with them, even in the face of, perhaps, content that is not exactly “up to par”, somewhat invasive advertising or less than optimal navigability.
While it is useless to do link building on pages affected by the Core Update, because even “super links” will not allow you to recover your rankings, it would always be useful to acquire links in a constant and increasing way, regardless of the Core Updates.
